Together in Solitude | Together Easter Series

Reading | Mark 14:32-42

Reflection

In our fast-paced world, it is unlikely that many of us schedule intentional time for solitude. Yet it is a discipline Jesus made a priority during His ministry. Solitude was vital to the health of His relationship with the Father, and it is clear from many accounts that Jesus made this a regular habit.

But Jesus wasn’t always solo in his solitude.

In Mark 14, just before He was arrested, Jesus took the disciples along with Him to pray in solitude. He asked them to stand by and keep watch while He talked to the Father, but they couldn’t seem to keep their eyes open. Three times He asked His friends to stand by in support, and three times they fell asleep on the job.

What if Jesus longed for community in His darkest hour of desperation? What if He wanted to experience support in the midst of solitude? There is power in a praying people, and Jesus knew this better than anyone.

That’s what community does. It supports, it spurs on, and it stands in the gap. Because of Jesus, we know how to be together in solitude.

Response

Pull out your calendar and schedule regular rhythms of solitude for the rest of the year. Consider taking a friend or two on a spiritual retreat. Ask God to develop a discipline of solitude in your community.
